Bootleg Tuesday - February 2nd

Lego Star Wars is one of the most popular brands of toys there are. I see the sets everywhere, and have to admit they're generally pretty cool (on a side note, any big Lego fans out there who like to write, send me an email). And even though today's bootleg toy is a Star Wars figure that requires assembly, I don't think it's going to be quite as big a hit as its Danish cousin. This classic bootleg is courtesy of the always-awesome The Undiscovered Playthings bootleg action figure blog.

So once again, things don't start off too bad here. Given just the packaging, these could turn out to be some pretty nifty toys. The vertical shot below with Han Solo is a dashing action piece that looks like it might actually belong on an old Sideshow Collectibles box instead of this cheap junk. Sure he's a little sun-burned, but what can you do with all those lightsabers around constantly. It's like a tanning lamp turned up to 14 being pointed directly at your face all the time. No wonder he went blind.

The horizontal package image isn't quite so forgiving. Those are some ugly toys to begin with (and that's what they're supposed to look like). Luke looks like he belongs in the old Total Justice line alongside the overly-muscled and castratingly-wide stances of Flash and Batman. But as long as the bootleggers get close to the original, they should be fi... well, it looks like they were far from close.

This is where the Lego connection comes in. This bootleg Luke Skywalker figure is actually packaged in pieces that have to be torn apart and reassembled. It's like a poor man's model kit, unpainted and all. I love the base color choices, because red, orange, and white just scream Luke to me. This turned out more like a piece of candy corn than a Jedi Knight. And you just know that none of the pieces fit where they're supposed to or stay in place. I'm sure he just crumbles to the ground like a mystifyingly dead Obi-Wan. Dare I even ask which side of the head we're looking at in the image above?
