Articulated Discussion Spotlight on DC Universe [SDCC 2010]

Spotlight on DC Universe [SDCC 2010]

Na-na na-na na-na na-na dee cee you seeeeee! Some classic Batman characters and ugly-bum Yellow Lanterns grace SDCC, along with new articulation, bulky JLU characters and a pretty head sculpt on Staurn Girl.

First of all, let me apologize for the brevity of my commentary and quality of some of these pictures, now I know to rent some better equipment for next year's convention. Also, thanks to anyone who has given me photography tips at the con so far, and a big "go to Hades" to anyone I emailed beforehand, asking for tips, who never responded. :)

The most notable changes to some of the up-coming DCUC figures is the additon of more points of articulation, which I love and hate depending on who has them where. I like wrist-hinges on almost any fig if it doesnt affect the sculpt too much, it's the double-hinged hinged elbows/kneesthat worry me. Based on the 4H's Alluxandra and Isabella figures, we know they can add that kind of articulation without sacrificing the sculpt and squeezing as much movement out of it. The double-elbows look like they will work great on the figures with thinner arms, like that Mercury and Creeper, but I don't think the joints will add all that much movement to Robin's MASSIVE arms (will somebody please tell the Titans to quit it with the steroids already?), which shouldn't be that beefy anyway. There must be an important reason why at least one of Robin's double-hinged elbowsisn't bent all the way. Or am I to believe that in a company full of very creative and talented people, no one had the insight to suggest "Maybe we should bend one of Robin's arms so fans can see the full potential of the new elbow-joints!". I think maybe it doesn't bend that much more than a single-hinge (because of the bulging muscles) so whoever set-up the display left him in a static pose to hide the fact. Or maybe bending it that far would have chipped some of the paint?

I like the double-knees. But I have to temper my enthusiasm because as Wes pointed-out, maybe this is a way for Mattel to justify raising the cost of the line again.

Jonah Hex! Though they share the same outfit, I wouldn't call the "DC Showcase Presents" Jonah Hex obsolete just because this articulated one is coming. I could think of a million other characters I'd want before that Azrael.

Note Riddler's standard articulation, he doesn't need double-joints like the athletic Creeper.

Bane, WTF? Why is he 9-feet tall? It's too small to be a 2-UP and too big for me to want it. PASS. Come on Mattel, Metamorpho was a neat idea, wouldn't it be cheaper to make a 7-inch CNC than a 10-inch one? (use a Etrigan torso or Bizarro parts to save money on new tooling, whatever! You guys are the pros!) You know even if people keep bitching about it they're still gonna buy it because anything would be an improvement over the first 6-inch Bane released. Well, anything except this new giant Bane you're releasing, sigh...

The Lanterns are at it again, this time with a spattering of wrist-hinges, double-joints, and enough creepy characters to keep us happy 'til Halloween.

I think I take better care of my customs than Mattel does with its 2-ups, heh. Still, the paint that's there is beautiul. And yay, finally a Kyle head to put on my '90s version.

BlackHand looks like a TOTAL BADASS!, I didn't do him justice. The problem was these GL figures were on a bottom shelf, and poorly-lit, so my average camera couldn't handle the low-lighting.

Woopee, a black Joker. Meh.

The display at the booth looked awesome, even though the figures were blandly-posed. Sorry about the lack of a wide shot, I would have gotten trampled if I tried to step back and take it!

Yet another happy item for me, finally a Lightning Lad head to put on my custom Animated Lightning Lad. And actually, all I may have to do is switch his right arm with the mechanical one I sculpted, then add a goatee, and I'm done, haha.

Yeah, that bump on his cheek is as creepy as it looks. He may be eating something but it's still weird!

Thank you 4H for finally sculpting a different female face, haha. Saturm Girl's cheeks are fuller, lips are pouty, hair is bouncy, she looks like a hot baby-sitter.

Raven looks nice, I don't mind her smaller size, the typically-4 Horsemen face does bug me though.

JLU is still around apparently, with "Destroyer" Darkseid, Kalibak, some Parademons, that weird Brainiac/Luthor fusion? (Luthorac? Disco Brainiac?), and a handful of some of your other favorite characters. Poor knocked-over Booster Gold in front, he never gets a break.

That's all I got for now- oh wait, STARRO BONDED WITH THE BOOTH BABE! Free foam Starro masks at the DC Booth, get one while you can!
