Guest Review - GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Snake Eyes (Paris Pursuit)

[TAO's Note: In the first of many GI Joe Week reviews from Clark, Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes gets some attention sent his way. Many people are holding off on buying any GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra toys in expectation of a terrible movie, but does that mean they're missing out on some great toys in the process? Read on to see if Snake Eyes is worth a purchase regardless of the movie's quality. I have a good feeling about this one!]

Snake Eyes has a nice sculpt.  There are not loads of details, but you don’t feel like anything is missing.  The costume is pretty simple, and the folds in the fabric look good.  The overcoat really makes this version of Snake Eyes pop.  It is the most detailed part of the figure, you can see button holes and stitches, and it looks good in a neutral or action pose.  The head is my favorite part of this figure.  It is simple, but very well done.  There are a few sculpted details that make it look like a thick mask that might offer a bit of protection, not just a fabric balaclava.  The visor is a separate piece of glossy black plastic glued into place.  The best part of this head:  there is no sculpted mouth.  Without the mouth, this Snake Eyes looks more like the comic/cartoon version.

Sculpt Score: 8 / 10

There is nothing at all wrong with the paint, but there are hardly any painted spots.  The body and head are molded in black plastic, while the coat and arms are molded in dark gray plastic.  There are a couple of spots here and there that have silver paint which are well done.  Overall, it looks good for the figure, but I can’t give it a great score.

Paint Score: 7 / 10

Snake Eyes has the standard articulation of the modern G.I. Joe figures.  The coat does limit some of the movement in the hips and the torso joint.  Everything else has a very good range of motion, and none of the joints are too loose.

Articulation Score: 8 / 10

Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes looks cool, plays well, has good articulation, and comes with great accessories (Timber, sword with scabbard, rifle, pistol, knife, and stand).  He looks unique when compared to other incarnations of Snake Eyes, but he is still recognizable.  Also, if you have the black Snake Eyes from the 25th Anniversary line, you can switch their heads and it looks pretty cool too.

Fun Score: 9 / 10

I paid $7.99 for Snake Eyes, I would feel a lot better if he were $5.99, even $6.99 (which they had been, but this one wasn’t in stores yet).  It is not that he is ridiculously over-priced, but for a toy line that aches for some army building eight bucks a pop really hurts.  He looks cool, has good accessories, and there are no quality control issues, so that keeps his value score from being really low.

Value Score: 7 / 10

8 / 10 - Very nice sculpt that will fit in well with your other Joe figures.

7 / 10 - Just a few small details, but other than that it’s all plastic.

8 / 10 - Typical great Joe articulation, slightly hampered by the coat.

9 / 10 - He’s a ninja with sword, guns, and pet wolf, ‘nuff said.

7 / 10 - Yeah, yeah….he is $8 for a small figure, it’s too much, I can’t do anything about it.

85 / 100 - This is a Great Toy

[TAO's Note: Wait a minute there Clark, your math is significantly off!] Well, I forgot to mention that I’m a huge Snake Eyes fan.  Also, this is a case where Paris Pursuit Snake Eyes is greater than the sum of his parts.  I think it has all to do with his overcoat.  I can’t explain it, but I just really love the look of this figure, and with everything else being solid he comes out to being a great Snake Eyes.  Let us not forget, no movie-mouth.  If you’re a fan of the character, then I think you’ll like this toy.
