Guest Review - Transformers Classics - Jetfire

[Updatedude finally brings us a review of a toy from this side of the Pacific. This time it's Jetfire of Hasbro's Transformers Classics line from a few years ago. He's a compromise between two classic forms, but has he compromised quality in favor of quantity? Read on to find out!]

Name: Jetfire
Line: Transformers, Robots in Disguise, Classic Voyager (Transformers Classics 1.0)
Manufacturer: Hasbro
Released: 2006
Price: Online: $12.99-$15.99
Accessories: Helmet, FAST pack, two forearm cannons with missiles, two laser rifles (which combine for double barreled blaster)
Sponsor Listings: Amazon (Single)-$74.97

9 / 10 - Jetfire is an interesting case. The original toy was a straight up release of the Macross Valkyrie, as can be seen in the commercial on AD and Battlegrip. Jetfire even had the same Valkyrie head design. However, for various reasons, the animated version had to go through a complete makeover. Resulting in Skyfire, an Autobot jet that bore little resemblance to the Valkyrie.
This Classics rendition of Jetfire is a compromise design that manages to homage both versions of Jetfire/Skyfire. Sans FAST Pack/Back Pack, Jetfire looks much like a Macross Valkyrie, save for the oddly shaped nosecone. With the attachment however, he not only looks like a Macross fighter with the FAST Pack, but Skyfire from the original Transformers series. Same deal with the robot mode. Depending on how you configure him, ie with or without helmet, with wings up or down, or with or without FAST Pack, Classics Jetfire can resemble either the original Jetfire, or the animated Skyfire. This is all pretty impressive, when you consider that both original designs are actually quite different from one another. Otherwise, this is a good looking Transformer with lots of detail. He's got loads and loads of paneling and rivets on his jet  parts for instance.
The downsides are that his arms are blatantly visible in jet mode, and that his helmet is a tad large; though it still looks reasonably good despite that.

6 / 10 - Jetfire doesn't really have much by way of paint apps. What he has are all clean and aesthetically pleasing, so I can't fault him there. But as with most Transformers, he's simply casted in the right colors. In this case, he's mostly white. Which looks real cool, though as TF fans know, white (and gold) plastic is the bane of us all. As such plastic is prone to yellowing. My Jetfire's a uniformed cream color now, despite my best efforts to keep him out of the sun. This is especially visible in shots where he has his helmet on, as the helmet's painted white rather than casted. So, buyer beware.

6 / 10 - Jetfire is widely considered one of the best of the first round of Classics. Being an articulation junkie, I totally disagree. Jetfire's articulation is adequate, but that's about it. His arms are fine, but the way his legs are constructed means he's got a fairly limited range of poses there. Fortunately, Jetfire's a toy with a lot of presence, so what few poses you can get him in will look pretty darn good regardless.
His joints are also all nice and tight. I haven't dusted off my Jetfire in a while, and when I did for this review, I found his elbows to be awesomely frustratingly tight. Which is awesome, you want 'em all tight as heck.
While he's by no means a brick, this is a toy more for standing in the background or having a conversation or being photographed from the waist up.

8 / 10 - Jetfire has got a huge array of options, thanks to the various ways you can configure him and attach his accessories. He looks wonderful no matter how you have him, and he's absolutely packing with the firepower. Heck, he even has a Gerwalk mode, though not the best one out there.
While he's not my first pick in having two toys do kung-fu on one another, he's certainly very durable, and is playable even by kids.

9 / 10 - Jetfire's a decent sized Voyager, but his significant array of accessories makes him better value than most. Of course, at this point, you're dealing with secondary market prices. But at retail price, this guy's pretty good. You're getting plenty of plastic for your paper.

Overall Score: 76 / 100 - This is a Good Toy

Jetfire's good, and he'd score higher if I totally loved the character. But I don't. I think he's a good toy with lots of options, but also lots of limitations due to his leg design. He fires on all cylinders except articulation, which to be fair, is actually decent. But since I weigh articulation pretty high, I can't gush over him. He might have a lot of presence, but he's unable to make that presence more dynamic. Recommended if you can find him for original retail or less, or if you're a big G1 Jetfire/Skyfire fan. Otherwise, you might consider the recently released Treadbolt version of this guy.
