Articulated Discussion Review - DC Universe Classics Wave 8 - Hawkgirl

Review - DC Universe Classics Wave 8 - Hawkgirl

You've already seen one review of Hawkgirl here at AD, but now it's time for Round 2. DrNightmare thought pretty highly of Mattel's leading lady in the 8th wave of the DC Universe Classics line, but am I quite so kind? Could it be that we gave her the exact same score? Read on to see just how high she flies with me.

Name: Hawkgirl
Line: DC Universe Classics, Wave 8, Figure 7
Manufacturer: Mattel
Released: 2nd Quarter 2009
Price: Retail: $11.99-$13.99, Online: $12.99-$15.99
Scale: 6.00 in. (figure is 6.50 in. tall to top of mask)
Accessories: Mace, sword, and spear
Collect & Connect Piece: Display stand

8 / 10 - Features new and character-specific tooling to great effect at feet, chest, and belt; questionable superheroic proportions with tiny waist and absurdly long legs; accessories fit in her hands well; hair and mask have nicely sculpted details; eyes of mask don't line up with where her eyes should be underneath; wings look fantastic with feather intricacies and slightly curving shape; belt emblem is off center a little; no corners were cut with accessories, as they all look great; all things considered she just looks good from most every angle.

7 / 10 - The colors may not match Hawkman's, but they look great on their own; strong bold green with a nice brush effect worked in; red and yellow contrast well on boots and torso to make her stand out in a display; the orange on her helmet has a subtle color shift that looks amazing; applications on her legs and torso are clean, except for some black fading present at the top of her boots, origin totally unknown; skin color matches across her entire body; wings are a solid gray with a nice drybrush effect to bring out their texture; although her eyes, ears, lips, earrings, and mask line between orange and black are super clean, there is some major slop on her face; she appears to have a very spotty moustache along with a smeared nose; accessories all have appropriate washes and dark, metallic colors matched with a leather-like color for the handles.

5 / 10 - A full complement of DCUC articulation plus added wing joints; there are two very limited spots, her neck and waist which are both very hard to move; wings are very functional and sturdy; the V shape of her crotch piece makes her legs turn out when moved up, which can make sitting poses impossible; her ankles are very loose, making most poses really difficult, actually relying on her wings for balance; articulation is well hidden (especially those gorgeous hips joints), except at her shoulders and wings, which are both quite distracting visually; it's just hard to pose her in a lot of the ways you might want to.

9 / 10 - Hawkgirl is quite simply a lot of fun to play around with; her articulation could stand to be more functional, but there's still enough there to make her do some cool things (as long as she doesn't have to balance); wings are a great element that make her a huge asset to any display or play situation; cool character design and she's becoming a very well known character; comes with 3 unique and deadly looking accessories to add to the entertainment, and they do; she comes with a stand for Giganta, but it may be more necessary for her; packaging has neat images and story information to add to flesh out play experiences; does look great once she's settled on a shelf.

9 / 10 - Costs roughly $12-$15, an average price these days for a six inch figure; a smaller framed figure, but she has huge wings!; includes 3 brand new accessories and other unique tooling; feels durable and should stand up to moderate levels of play; also includes a "piece" for Giganta, which is just a cheap stand; package is nice but nothing stellar; loose ankles are precarious and her stained face makes me wish I'd gotten a different one.

Overall Score: 76 / 100 - This is a Good Toy

My assessment of Hawkgirl isn't quite as great as past reviewers', but that's mainly due to a few isolated issues. She features a strong sculpt and okay paint, as well as being loads of fun at a nice value. If only her articulation were a little more functional.

P.S. This could be the figure I'm giving away this month, just leave a comment for a chance to win (if it's the one).
