Articulated Discussion Review - DCUC Series 4 - Captain Atom Gold

Review - DCUC Series 4 - Captain Atom Gold

This is the gold variant version of Captain Atom as seen in the graphic novel Kingdom Come. He is from Series 4 of the DC Universe Classics line by Mattel and also includes the Despero head and chest Collect and Connect pieces. Captain Atom Gold is a nice figure, if a little basic, but if you're a fan of this costume or Kingdom Come, he definitely deserves a purchase.

Sculpt

Captain Atom's sculpt is based off one of the basic DC Universe Classic body bucks used by various other characters. The good news about this is that it's a fine sculpt with accurate proportions and it looks generally nice. It works particularly well with Captain Atom, since his suit is supposed to be bonded to his skin, and the lack of sculpting for boots of gloves is actually how it should be. Given that, the small cloth wrinkles at his hips that look so good on other characters, just don't work with Captain Atom. The only other unique part of this sculpt is his head, which does the part of making him look like the classic military hero, with nicely done hair and a strong, basic expression.

Sculpt Score: 7 / 10 - Nice looking sculpt, great head sculpt, but it's just so basic, with small detail issues like the cloth wrinkles.

Paint

The paint on this figure is generally pretty good, especially considering the difficulties this costume presents. Both the gold and the red are perfect color choices, that shine nicely given his metal appearance, and are each just the right shade. His boots and gloves are painted on pretty straightly, with just a little bit of waviness in the line on the back of his boots. Each of the lines on his chest are really nicely and tightly done, but some problems show up when lining them up across articulation points. There is a little bit of slop on the figure, but nothing that's really distracting with a general look.

Paint Score: 8 / 10 - Nice color choice, pretty tight lines. He does have a little bit of slop, and problems with paint lining up across articulation in neutral positions

Articulation

Captain Atom's articulation is the DCUC standard, with plenty of different points. He's not as agile as old Marvel Legends figures, but he is able to get into plenty of poses and look natural in most all of them. The great thing about his articulation is that it so seemlessly blends with the sculpt. I did have an issue with his right elbow. It was stuck out of the package, and I'm sure it would've broken had I tried it. I did the old hot/cold water trick and it freed up, but it still feels a little gummy. So be careful for stuck joints when you get yours. All of his joints are tight and hold their positions well. Every points has a pretty free range of movement, including his neck, which is always nice too.

Articulation Score: 9 / 10 - Looks good with the sculpt, plenty of different points, good poseability and flexibility, but there can be stuck joints here and there, so be careful.

Fun

This figure is great on all the standard categories, and he feels great in your hand, but he just isn't much fun. He comes with no accessories, other than the Collect and Connect piece's, and he's about as basic as a figure can get. The costume is kind of strange, and probably not appealing to many kids, and most collectors. The character is little known, so that doesn't provide any excitement. There are no action features or cool elements to up the fun ante either. His great articulation is one positive element, because he can function perfectly in any fight scene. That just isn't enough alone to boost his fun score.

Fun Score: 5 / 10 - Pretty boring character and weird costume, no action features to play with, no accessories to liven things up either. Articulation is good enough to make him a solid character to pose and play with.

Value

Captain Atom retails for roughly $11-12, but I ordered this figure online and paid around $16 with shipping figured in. In total, wherever you get him, he'll be at least $12 I imagine. He is a solid toy, feels like he will last, and although not a huge figure, he feels like he's worth close to $12, as toys are just getting more expensive these days. On the other hand, other DCUC figures do include accessories at the same price, so that's a letdown. Some cool atom shaped hand attachments like Firestorm from Series 2 has would be a good, cheap addon. Still yet, Captain Atom does include the biggest piece of the Despero Collect and Connect piece, which includes two guns himself, so the value skyrockets considering this. You're essentially getting another 1/5th of a figure plus accessories for free with this $12, so that's a great deal. If you like the character at all, or just love DC Universe Classics, he's worth it.

Value Score: 9 / 10 - Basic figure without any accessories, but he feels worth it in your hands and also includes huge piece of Despero with two accessories.
