Articulated Discussion Review - DCUC Series 5 - Metallo C&C

Review - DCUC Series 5 - Metallo C&C

Metallo is a Superman bad guy who has gone through as many changes as Superman has years. He always looks a little different and for this collect and connect figure Mattel decided to go for this particular look, which is a big and intimidating one, as opposed to some of his more human versions. The only way to get this figure is by purchasing each of the 5 figures from DC Universe Classics Series 5 and assembling him, and he's well worth the effort in tracking each piece down, because he's a fantastic figure.

Sculpt

Metallo's sculpt must be where all of the money for Series 5 of DCUC went. Each of the other figures are just basic sculpt reissues but everything on this guy is brand new and perfectly detailed. This sculpt is just amazing with every little detail while still remaining attractive overall. He's full of little rivets, screws, wires, scratches, gears, dents, and every other miniscule characteristic you can imagine. He looks appropriately technological but still like he was pieced together from scrap, which is great. He's also really big, and the tallest collect and connect figure in the DCUC line yet. There's nothing wrong with this sculpt and everything right with it.

Sculpt Score: 10 / 10 - Unique and attractive design, loaded down with details, big and imposing.

Paint

The paint on this figure is equally stunning. He's mostly just silver that looks aged and worn in some spots while fresh and shiny in others. It's a good effect. He also has a great rust effect on his boots that makes him look like he's been standing in water too long. The silver color combines nicely with accent colors like the bronze on his hands/head and the teal wires and bands. The most amazing effect is the beautiful job with the green kryptonite glow on his chest once the chestplate has been removed. It really looks like the kryptonite is glowing a flourescent green. They didn't hold anything back with the paint here as it's really well applied and chosen perfectly.

Paint Score: 10 / 10 - Great details like rust and kryptonite glow, good color choices, great applications.

Articulation

Metallo's articulation is his only weak spot, and even it isn't bad at all. He has a nice articulation model with a lot of different points, even more than the DCUC standard really. I think this figure would have naturally suited finger articulation, but it's not a huge loss. Thankfully Mattel has managed to blend his articulation into the sculpt perfectly. They did a fantastic job taking advantage of his mechanical nature when working the articulation in naturally as gears and hydrolics. The problem with Metallo is that some of his joints are really loose, particularly his ab joint. It's hard to get his upper body to balance in some positions because he's so top heavy and the joint is loose. He often just falls over because his chest and arms start to fall forward, pulling the rest of him too. This is compounded by his super loose hip joints, which suffer from the same issue. I have trouble getting my pegs to stay in the hip sockets as well, much like the Series 1 Metamorpho. This isn't a terrible problem when playing with him but can be an issue with some poses; you just have to take your time to balance him.

Articulation Score: 8 / 10 - Huge number of points, free range of movement in all of them, some are a little too free and loose.

Fun

This may be the most fun figure in the DCUC line yet. First off, he's enormous. Not as big as some of the old Marvel Legends build-a-figures but the biggest in this line so far. Secondly, he just looks great, be it to kid or collector. He's a big menacing bad guy that could easily wreak havoc in any display or carpet battle. Metallo also has a load of articulation which only helps this cause. He doesn't include any accessories other than his removable chest piece but he makes up for it in utter wow factor and size.

Fun Score: 9 / 10 - Great and menacing design, lots of articulation, big size and presence among other figures, could use some sort of accessory like destruction debris or machinery.

Value

Guaging the value of a collect and connect figure is a difficult price given they don't really have a set price point. Buying each of the five figures needed to assemble Metallo would cost roughly $60 at retail prices, but you're also getting five figures +accessories for that $60. This is easily a $20 action figure, and considering all that you get for buying five figures, it's a great deal. He's well worth it even if you don't want two or three of the other five characters. He's durable, big, easy to put together, and just well made. He feels great in your hands and looks good on the shelf.

Value Score: 10 / 10 - Big hunk of plastic, feels durable and sturdy, looks great on shelf, high production standards.

Overall Score: 94 / 100 - This is a Wonderful Toy

Metallo is a fantastic figure that Mattel obviously put a lot of time into. He's got an amazing sculpt coupled with a incredible paint job that's only aided by solid articulation, a great fun score, and value you can't beat.
