Articulated Discussion Review - WoW Series 3 - Blood Elf Paladin Quin'Thalan Sunfire

Review - WoW Series 3 - Blood Elf Paladin Quin'Thalan Sunfire

The Blood Elf Paladin Quin'Thalan Sunfire is the final figure from DC Unlimited's World of Warcraft Series 3 up for review. He's another figure that stands out on the strength of his amazing scupt and paint but falls when it comes to articulation and fun.

Sculpt

Quin'Thalan Sunfire may be my favorite World of Warcraft sculpt yet. I think he just looks cool. He's set in a wide stance wearing a huge pile of intricate armor, shield and weapon in hand. First things first, his armor is amazing in the sculpt department. It has an eagle motif with eagle's heads or wings everywhere you look. Combine that with the elven looking layered plate design and you've got one beautiful piece of protection. There are overlapping sections, curved carvings, grooves, plates, wings, gems, ropes, wrinkles, buckles, and borders sculpted in everywhere you look. Someone spent an immense amount of time on this guy, and it paid off. His hair is a little ugly if you ask me (see comic) but it's still very well sculpted with detailed strands and widly flowing sections. The double bladed sword and shielf are also fantastic sculpts that show off more detail and elven design, also carrying the eagle theme. The only weakness here is the face sculpt, which is a bit "meth" for me, because he looks like some sort of harrowed addict, which may in fact be appropriate for a blood elf. Even despite the weak face sculpt, this is a real thing of beauty and deserves a perfect score.

Sculpt Score: 10 / 10 - So many details, someone paid a lot of attention to this guy, great shape and stance, awesome accessories.

Paint

This figure is painted almost as well as it is sculpted, but with a few weak spots. The colors work perfectly, with a dark, almost blood colored red with a perfect golden foil. These two colors accentuate each other perfectly and the varying areas of black under armor bring them both out as well. Most of the detail work is very crisp and tight, and I can't seem to find any slop either. There are a couple weak areas like each of the bright red gems on his armor and shield which look cheap, like bad jewelry. Some of them weren't painted with full coverage, leaving the dark red underneath for an ugly, albeit hard to notice problem. His face also looks much to light and washed out to me, with awkward green eyes. The paint on his face almost looks dirty, as if it was mixed with a little brown or just doesn't cover completely. Most of this figure looks amazing, and you'll have to hunt to find the problems, just hope that you get a cleaner face paint.

Paint Score: 9 / 10 - Colors work wonderfully together, mostly great applications, some messed up areas, ugly face.

Articulation

Quin'Thalan Sunfire lacks any articulation like a majority of the WoW figures. He's essentially a small plastic statue that's hard to call an action figure. It would've been easy to add a few cuts here and there, but they've sacrificed his articulation for a pleasing aesthetic and sure standing pose, so it's almost forgivable. All the same, I'm sure people like me would like to be able to play with their amazing figure, or at least make subtle variations to their pose, so it's hard to award many points here.

Articulation Score: 1 / 10 - Zero articulation, sacrificed for the appearance and pose for better or for worse.

Fun

It's hard to say a figure is fun when they don't have any articulation, but something about this guy just seems playful and unquantifiably enjoyable. I think his design is just incredible and a blast to look at. Who doesn't love a huge elven knight decked out in intricate yet effective armor using a double bladed sword and massive shield. I'm proud to have him sit on my shelf and show off to people despite his lack of articulation or playability. Being able to actually use him in a toy battle would be nice as well would being able to vary his pose to my liking (although it already looks pretty good). He does come with two great accessories which could always be used for other figures but work wonders for him as well. The main question to answer here is, "what do I do with him?"

Fun Score: 4 / 10 - Cool fantasty design that's just fun to look at, no way to pose or play, no articulation, some cool accessories.

Value

At $15 this is a relatively expensive figure. All the same, he's really pretty big. He's not exceedingly tall, just really wide, almost a square and he feels heavy and sturdy in your hands. I think if you did try to play with this guy, there's little you could do to harm him, only risk cutting yourself on one of his many points or smashing a toe from dropping him. It's a well made figure that they spent a lot of time on which always improves my perception of value. They certainly didn't skimp on his sculpt, not his paint, plus he comes with multiple accessories to improve his value. There's really a lot here for $15 and if you like fantasy figures or play World of Warcraft, I'd say he's worth it all.

Value Score: 9 / 10 - Durable, sturdy, large figure, comes with accessories, intricate sculpt and paint.

Overall Score: 66 / 100 - This is an Okay Toy

While lacking in any articulation and being less than fun, this figure has a beautiful sculpt with fantastic paint that makes it worth the price.

P.S. This could be the figure I'm giving away this month, just leave a comment for a chance to win (if he's the one).
