Spotlight on Statues [SDCC 2010]

There are times when I think buying statues is the dumbest waste of money ever (usually when I'm broke). And then there are times when I'd have no problem forking over $300 for a statue of a woman in a metal bikini (usually after payday). At base, they're big, pretty and very expensive paperweights, but damn, I'd love to own every single big pretty useless piece of awesome being displayed in the convention!

It's easy to laugh in disbelief at the $300 price-tags on some Sideshow Collectibles statues when looking at them online, I know I do! It's a different feeling entirely when you have the magnificent statue there in front of you, gleaming under beams of glowing light. First of all, they're HUGE, and look even bigger and more worth your money if you're used to seeing tiny mini half-busts of Batgirl for an insulting $50.00 (what's up with that?!) They're also painted to perfection and have beautiful sculpts. There was a Thor-bust on display at their booth that could have easily been priced at ONE MILLION DOLLARS, and if I had the money, I'd of course get it (and a pirate-ship, and a castle, and a pony).

DC Comics is no slouch either, wowing everyone with their "Women of the DC Universe" and now "Covergirls of the DC Universe" lines and various other display pieces. That's the first Joker statue I've ever liked.

WETA was there with some awesome stuff as usual, including District 9 weapons, steampunk guns, and if I recall correctly, a LOTR solid-gold "One Ring" that was selling for OVER $2000!? What the hell? I hope it was exaggeration on the part of the person I heard it from (you can buy a great replica of the "One Ring" for like $100, no need to buy the $2000 one).

There was a booth way the hell in a corner somewhere that had some of the sexiest stautes I've ever seen, the Lady Death was breath-taking, and whoa momma! Where has She-Dragon been all my life? That Katchoo is an example of when I think paying so much for such a simple sculpt is silly. Fine, they're all simple designs, but when something is that sexy, you can charge whatever you want!

Dark Horse had a pretty White Violin statue for over $100 that just doesn't feel worth the buy because of how simple the design is.

I'm not all that interested in the Marvel/Kotobukiya statues, they have some very girly poses, heh.

Psylocke here looks like a total badass, I belive it's also made by Kotobukiya, shows the different styles they're capable of.

I can't believe I'm saying it, but I'd love to buy some of the Star Wars statues that were on display in Gentle Giant's area. The statues seem to be like DC's "Women of the DCU", though I seem to have been saying "WOW!" a lot more there than at the DC display.
