Toy Haul - Whoplastic

Well, SDCC has come and gone, and now those of us who weren't lucky enough to attend are scrambling to get our hands on the various exclusives offered up at the con. But whereas one company largely screwed homebound collectors with its exclusives and others took the more admirable route of offering their exclusives online after the convention, another took the even more impressive option of distributing its exclusives to various retailers and authorizing them to begin selling them at 8:00 AM last Thursday -- the actual time that they went on sale at the convention in San Diego! So thanks to that decision -- and the speedy service of one particular store -- some of us have already received our SDCC wares. Find out what in the next installment of:

DOCTOR WHO FIGURES!!! Or Whoplastic, as we like to call these offerings in my tiny circle. The two sets at the top of the image are the SDCC exclusives mentioned above -- the First and Second Doctor 2-packs (the figures are respectively packaged with the Saucer Commander Dalek and a 1967 Cyberman) from Underground Toys. I much prefer the classic series to the modern revival, so even at $40 these sets were must-haves for me. However, $80 for four figures doesn't seem like much of a value... and since I was already dropping a whole bunch of dough, I figured I might as well seek to improve the average cost of each figure! WhoNA has tons of new series Whoplastic at clearance prices (not to sound like an advertisement; I don't get anything from them except fantastic service, I swear), so I figured I'd bulk up my order with a number of those.

Note the two werewolves -- I actually already have one, but the figure is so darned neat that I figured having two more for customs wouldn't hurt, whether I decide to repaint one in a different color or need clawed limbs for something. He's also huge. The Doctor Who line itself is in a 5" scale (many of the figures come to 5.5"; ostensibly because they're quite tall), but that werewolf easily tops 7" and is forced to stand somewhat hunched. As such, he fits in with most figure lines and will look great in any horror-themed display. Similarly, grey winged demon things and creepy scarecrows are always welcome. And the Autons are killer mannequins! Many of the newer episodes have been awful, but you really don't need to like them to appreciate these well-made figures of the creatures that appeared in them.

So yes, I'm very happy with my purchases and look forward to reviewing them -- whether here or at Scary-Crayon (or both; there's enough Whoplastic to go around!) -- in the not-too-distant future. Feel free to hop into your TARDIS if you can't wait. ;)

P.S. Articulated Discussion sponsors Mike's Comics N' Stuff and Ka-Razy Kings of Toys have Whoplastic available at affordable prices too (the latter especially; check the clearance section), so be sure to give them a look as well if you're curious about Doctor Who figures!
